Sol And The Role of Tattoos In The Dark Light

Hi, Natalia! Thanks so much for letting the tour stop by!

Of all the characters in The Dark Light, Sol is the one I’m most often asked about, especially after the book’s cover went live! So, having met Mia earlier in the tour, it seemed only fair to devote a stop to everything you wanted to know about Sol.

I’ll admit that Sol was actually one of the hardest characters in the book to write. He’s a pretty tough nut to crack--focused, intense, and incredibly reserved--and on more than one occasion he was determined to keep up this front no matter how much I--and Mia--wanted him to open up. Sol is definitely a young man who likes to remain in control, though he does have something of a reckless side to his nature, too. He’s a guy with a mission, a goal. And, of course, he also has that amazing tattoo.

Tattoos play a really big role in The Dark Light, and Sol’s in particular has a very important meaning. The bird on Sol’s back is known as the Lunestral, which is a mythical creature that is said to symbolize resilience, protection, and hope. Why Sol got the tattoo is explained in the story, but it is there for a reason, other than providing some very welcome eye candy on the cover of the book! It is a tattoo that Sol wears with pride. In fact, though The Dark Light’s gorgeous cover is depicted in gray scape, the tattoo in the book appears in full blazing color. And Sol isn’t the only one in The Dark Light who has tattoos. You’ll meet several characters in the story whose tattoos also have meaning.

One fun fact about Sol that isn’t revealed in The Dark Light is that he actually has a second tattoo, and that there’s one particular scene in the story where this was going to be revealed. Time didn’t allow me to show it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there, and if I ever return to the world of The Dark Light, the location of the second tattoo is definitely something that will eventually be revealed. A little hint? It’s actually a small tattoo of a poppy that Sol got after losing a bet. Why a poppy? Well, Sol’s full of mysteries and secrets, so the answer to that question is something you’ll definitely have to stay tuned for!
