"From now on I'm Alan of Trebond, the younger twin. I'll be a knight."
And so young Alanna of Trebond begins the journey to knighthood. Alanna has always craved the adventure and daring allowed only for boys; her twin brother, Thom, yearns to learn the art of magic. So one day they decide to switch places: Disguised as a girl, Thom heads for the convent; Alanna, pretending to be a boy, is on her way to the castle of King Roald to begin her training as a page. But the road to knighthood is not an easy one. As Alanna masters the skills necessary for battle, she must also learn to control her heart and to discern her enemies from her allies. Filled with swords and sorcery, adventure and intrigue, good and evil, Alanna's first adventure begins — one that will lead to the fulfillment of her dreams and make her a legend in the land.
My Thoughts
Alanna felt more like a middle-grade than a Young Adult read for me. Song of the Lioness #1 tells the tale of Alanna, a ten years old girl who switches places with her twin brother to become a Knight. In this volume, we are introduced to the foundation of the characters and the world Tamora Pierce created. I liked this, and I really appreciate that Pierce dedicated this whole book to introduce readers into Alanna's world.
Four years in 240 pages. That is quiet a lot of time in just a few pages. Tamora Pierce did an amazing job taking all the highlights in Alanna's first years as a knight student, and puts them into this First Adventure. This makes of Alanna a very fast and enjoyable read that keeps you engaged and turning pages with no rest! As I said, I really appreciate that Tamora Pierce wrote a whole book for Alanna's early years as a student (I have read books where authors have skipped this and just jump directly to the main point. Which is not bad, but reading about the character's early years, give us so much more reasons to love the characters!). In this book, we witness Alanna develop a strong link with Prince Jon, Gary, George, Mistress Cooper and Myles. We see her interactions and conflicts with many other characters and we also see how she deals with her secret to keep it safe. We witness Alanna going through womanhood as well as the way she become stronger and wiser. I am very grateful to have seen all these important things in Alanna's life because now that I am in the second book, I feel a stronger connection to the characters. Time flies in Song of the Lioness #1! and by the end of it, you don't want to turn the last page. We see so little compare to so many years that pass in this this book that when I finished the book, I felt unsatisfied. Yes, I felt that way because I wanted this book to continue. I wanted to keep reading more and more and see what was next in Alanna's life. I felt it ended in the best moment! I was suddenly swooning all over Prince Jon and then it was the end! But thanks Lord I bought the whole collection all at once! (I am so smart!)
While reading Alanna, I felt what I was reading was the important things to know before the best starts. If you are going to read The First Adventure, I really recommend you to have In the Hands of the Goddess (Song of the Lioness #2) right beside you! because right when things start to get really good, then it ends! Do I recommend it? Hell yeah I do! but be prepare to find a book where times flies and that mostly, according to what I felt, it will give you the foundation of Alanna's new life. In fact, Alanna: The First Adventure is just the beginning!

Omg. I love love LOVE Tamora Pierce's work. Her heroines are all such wonderful role models. And you're right about having the second book in hand. I bought an omnibus edition that had all four books, so that was a plus. Of the Tortall novels my favorite one is the Tricksters series, the one about Alanna's daughter ;)

Books And Beyond
Great review! I haven't read any Tamora Pierce, but I hear great things about her. I'm adding this book to my list!
I've heard this series is really good! I think definitely going to have to move it up the TBR!
I first read it in Danish when I was twelve, and had read it so many times by the time I was twenty, that I could practically remember each line before a re-read. Now I have them all in English, and I still love them, age 25. Working in a library, I recommend them to all young fantasy-sprouts and the Song of the Lioness series are more dear to me than any other series. Reading them is like coming home. And although you can tell that the series was written early in Tamora Pierce's career (they do seem a bit rough sometimes) I cannot say anything else than that these are must-reads. They are lovely. Exiting. Thrilling. Both for guys and girls. Fantasy-classics without a doubt.
